Custom threshold & multiplier

Overtime Calculator

Calculate regular hours, overtime hours, overtime rate and estimated gross pay using the threshold and multiplier that apply to your situation.

Estimate overtime pay

Enter decimal hours, such as 42.5 for 42 hours 30 minutes.

Regular hours40.00
Overtime hours0.00
Overtime hourly rate$37.50
Regular pay$1,000.00
Overtime pay$0.00
Estimated gross pay$1,000.00
Effective hourly rate$25.00

40.00 hrs × $25.00 = $1,000.00

This calculator performs arithmetic using the threshold and multiplier you enter. It does not determine whether overtime is legally required, which hours qualify, or which rules apply to a worker.

How overtime pay is calculated

Start by separating total hours into regular hours and overtime hours using a threshold you choose.

Overtime hours = max(0, total hours − overtime threshold)

Then multiply the regular hourly rate by the overtime multiplier.

Overtime rate = regular hourly rate × overtime multiplier

Example

If you work 45 hours at $25 per hour, use a 40-hour threshold and a 1.5× multiplier, the calculator treats 40 hours as regular time and 5 hours as overtime. The overtime rate is $37.50 per hour.

Why the threshold is configurable

Overtime rules can differ by jurisdiction, employer policy, worker classification and work arrangement. This tool therefore does not assume that a particular threshold or multiplier applies to everyone.

What gross pay means here

Estimated gross pay is regular pay plus overtime pay before taxes, deductions, benefits, bonuses or other adjustments.

Frequently asked questions

What multiplier should I use?

Use the multiplier that applies under your employer policy, agreement or applicable rules. Common examples may include 1.5× or 2×, but this calculator does not determine which one applies.

Can I calculate overtime with decimal hours?

Yes. For example, 42 hours 30 minutes can be entered as 42.5 hours.

Does this include taxes or deductions?

No. The gross-pay estimate is before taxes, deductions and other payroll adjustments.
